I told her rest and time would likely fix it, and then she asked the question I hear from multi-pet clients every single week: “Can the cat catch this?” The answer surprised her — sometimes, yes. Five days later, her tabby was sneezing on the couch. What’s Actually Spreading: It’s Never Just One Germ

Here’s the first thing I explain to clients: kennel cough in dogs isn’t a single disease. The Common Cat Cold

The feline version, usually called a feline upper respiratory infection or URI, follows a different script. Roughly 80 to 90 percent of cases come from just two viruses: feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus. Cat cold symptoms typically show up 2 to 10 days after exposure and include sneezing, nasal and eye discharge, congestion, fever, and going off food. There’s a useful pattern here: calicivirus tends to cause painful ulcers in the mouth, while herpesvirus leans toward the eyes.

URI is the most common illness in shelter cats, and there’s a reason why. The herpesvirus goes latent — it hides in the body for life and can reactivate under stress. I saw this with Pickle, a five-month-old tabby adopted from a shelter, who’d been perfectly healthy for two months and then started sneezing the week the family moved to a new apartment. Her owner was baffled: “She was fine!” She was — until the stress of moving woke the virus back up. That’s not a failure of the shelter or the vaccine; it’s just how herpesvirus behaves.

Contagious Long After They Look Better

This is the fact that surprises almost everyone, and it’s the single most important thing to understand about outbreaks: pets stay contagious well past the point where they look recovered. Dogs with Bordetella can keep shedding the bacteria for 6 to 14 weeks after symptoms fade. So the dog who’s bouncing around happily on day ten can still be patient zero for the next outbreak at daycare.

The same logic explains a misconception I run into constantly: “He’s vaccinated, so he can’t spread it.” Vaccines are excellent at blunting severity, but they don’t reliably stop shedding. That’s why well-vaccinated daycare groups still see outbreaks — mild symptoms, plenty of transmission.

And now the twist that tripped up Dana: Bordetella bronchiseptica is one of the few respiratory pathogens that moves in both directions between dogs and cats. Her cat didn’t just catch “something” — he quite possibly caught it from Moose. (A rare footnote worth knowing: Bordetella occasionally affects immunocompromised humans, so if someone in the home has a seriously weakened immune system, mention the exposure to their physician. For everyone else, this is not a reason to worry.)

Daycares, shelters, and crowded homes are hotspots for predictable reasons: shared air, shared surfaces, and stress, which suppresses immunity. Fomites — objects that carry germs, like bowls, hands, and clothing — do a lot of the work. Calicivirus in particular is stubborn and can survive on surfaces for days to weeks. Canine influenza (H3N2) adds another wrinkle: dogs can shed it before they show any symptoms at all.

You may remember news from late 2023 about an atypical canine respiratory illness — Oregon alone logged more than 200 cases of chronic coughs that resisted standard treatment, with similar reports in other states. No cause was ever definitively confirmed, and most experts agreed it remained rare. If there was a silver lining, it was faster adoption of multiplex PCR panels, which now let us identify the exact pathogen within a day or two instead of guessing — invaluable for tracing outbreaks and deciding whether antibiotics are warranted.

Vaccination: Timing Matters More Than Most People Realize

For Dogs

The core distemper combination vaccine (DHPP), started at 6 to 8 weeks of age, covers parainfluenza and adenovirus — two CIRDC players. Bordetella is vaccinated separately, and it comes in three routes: intranasal (nose drops), oral, and injectable. In my experience, the intranasal route is the one to ask about when time is short, because it stimulates local immunity in the airways fastest — some studies show protection beginning within about 72 hours. The Remedy I’ve Changed My Mind About

For years I recommended L-lysine, an amino acid supplement, for cats with herpesvirus flare-ups. Owners loved it, and I believed I saw results. Then controlled studies came along showing little to no benefit, and I changed my recommendation. I share this because I think it’s fair to be honest when the evidence moves — and because I’d rather you spend your money on things that work. Steamy bathroom air for a congested cat? Fine as comfort care, alongside whatever your vet recommends. But if a cat stops eating because she can’t smell her food, that’s a vet visit, not a supplement.

Quarantine That Works, and the Signs That Mean “Go Now”

Containment, Step by Step

Most of these infections are viral, which is exactly why I don’t reach for antibiotics automatically — overusing them fuels resistance, and they’re only justified when bacteria like Bordetella or Mycoplasma are suspected or confirmed. Containment, on the other hand, always helps:

  • Isolate the sick pet for a minimum of 10 to 14 days after symptoms start — longer (three weeks or more) for confirmed Bordetella.
  • Use separate bowls, bedding, and litter boxes, and don’t share crates or carriers.
  • Wash your hands after handling the sick pet, and change clothes and shoes between the sick room and the healthy pets.
  • Disinfect hard surfaces with diluted household bleach (1:32) or an accelerated hydrogen peroxide product — calicivirus shrugs off many everyday cleaners.
  • Keep your dog home from daycare, boarding, and grooming until the cough has fully resolved, plus a buffer period. When in doubt, ask the facility.

When a Cough Becomes an Emergency

Most kennel cough and cat colds resolve on their own, but bring your pet in urgently if you see any of these:

  • Labored breathing or a fast respiratory rate while resting
  • Stretching the neck out or posturing to breathe
  • Blue or gray gums
  • High fever
  • Coughing up blood
  • Refusing food or water
  • Profound lethargy
  • Any symptoms lasting beyond two to three weeks

Some patients need closer watching from the start: very young puppies and kittens, seniors, unvaccinated pets, cats with FIV or FeLV, and brachycephalic — flat-faced — breeds. Winston, a four-year-old French Bulldog, is why I take flat-faced coughers seriously. His owner brought him in because “he seemed hot and wasn’t himself,” and his cough had quietly progressed to pneumonia. Because we caught it early, he recovered fully, but that narrow airway anatomy leaves very little margin.

If there’s one takeaway I’d want taped to the fridge of every multi-pet home, it’s this: respiratory germs don’t respect species boundaries or vaccination records, and they don’t leave on the timeline that’s convenient for you. A dog who looks recovered can still be contagious for weeks, and a stressed shelter cat can relapse years after adoption. A little patience — an extra two weeks of home quarantine, a vaccine timed before the boarding stay — is what stands between one coughing dog and a whole household of them. And it’s worth remembering that these same pathogens have been documented in wild canids and big cats in rehabilitation settings, which means keeping our own pets healthy isn’t just household management; it’s part of being a good neighbor to the animals living just beyond our back fences.
