The Sting That Changed Everything: Understanding Anaphylaxis

Most bug bites and stings cause nothing more than mild, localized irritation — a small bump, some redness, perhaps a few minutes of licking or scratching. That’s a localized reaction, and while it’s uncomfortable, it’s not dangerous. The immune system recognizes the venom or saliva as foreign, mounts a contained defense at the site, and moves on.

Anaphylaxis is something else entirely. It’s a severe, rapid-onset, systemic hypersensitivity reaction — meaning the whole body goes into alarm mode simultaneously. Instead of confining the response to the sting site, the immune system floods the body with inflammatory chemicals called histamines and other mediators. Blood vessels dilate and become leaky, blood pressure plummets, airways constrict, and organs begin to struggle for oxygen. He had significant facial swelling but no systemic signs, so we treated him with injectable antihistamines and steroids, monitored him for several hours, and sent him home the same day.
