Young animals get sick.This is a fact of early life, and it's not a reflection of owner failure or bad luck — young immune systems are still developing, maternal antibody protection is waning, and the world is full of pathogens they haven't encountered before. What matters most is knowing which illnesses to watch for, which are true emergencies, and which can be managed with prompt but non-urgent care. Because the difference, in a ten-week-old puppy or kitten, can be measured in hours.
Why Young Pets Are More Vulnerable
The immune system at birth is naive — it has not encountered most pathogens and lacks the experience to mount a rapid defense. Maternal antibodies (transferred through colostrum) provide a bridge, but these passive antibodies decline over weeks, creating a window of vulnerability between maternal protection and vaccine-acquired immunity.
Young animals also have less physiological reserve. A 4kg puppy with severe vomiting and diarrhea can become dangerously dehydrated in under 12 hours. The same condition in an adult dog would typically allow a longer evaluation window.
Illnesses Specific to Puppies
Canine Parvovirus
This is the one that keeps me up at night — and appropriately so. Parvovirus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal lining and bone marrow, causing profuse bloody diarrhea, severe vomiting, collapse, and life-threatening immune suppression. Mortality in untreated cases can approach 91%; with intensive in-hospital supportive care, survival rates reach 85–95% at well-equipped facilities, though the treatment is expensive and not always available.
Parvovirus is extraordinarily stable in the environment — it can survive on surfaces for months to years. Unvaccinated dogs (and incompletely vaccinated puppies) are at risk from contaminated soil, parks, and any area where infected dogs have been.
Signs: Sudden onset lethargy, severe vomiting, bloody or foul-smelling diarrhea, rapid deterioration.
Emergency: Yes. Do not wait. A puppy with these signs needs same-day veterinary care.
Prevention: Completing the full vaccine series. Limiting exposure to high-risk areas until vaccination is complete.
Canine Distemper
Distemper is a multi-system viral infection affecting respiratory, GI, and nervous systems. Initial signs (fever, eye/nasal discharge, lethargy, cough) can be mistaken for kennel cough, but distemper progresses to neurological signs — seizures, muscle twitching, and paralysis — that are much more serious.
Distemper is vaccine-preventable and less common than parvo, but it remains a risk in unvaccinated dogs, particularly those from shelters or areas with low vaccination rates.
Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis)
A honking, harsh cough is the hallmark. Kennel cough is a multi-pathogen complex — most commonly Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria alongside parainfluenza and adenovirus — that causes an irritated, inflamed trachea and upper airways.
In otherwise healthy puppies, it often resolves within 1–2 weeks with or without treatment. In young puppies under 8 weeks, immunocompromised animals, or those who develop fever or stop eating, it warrants veterinary attention. Persistent coughing can progress to pneumonia.
Bordetella vaccine reduces severity and transmission but doesn't fully prevent infection — the pathogen complex is diverse.
Hypoglycemia (Small-Breed Puppies)
Toy and small-breed puppies have very limited glycogen stores and a high metabolic rate. Skipped meals, stress, cold, or illness can cause blood sugar to drop rapidly. Signs progress quickly: weakness, disorientation, uncoordinated walking, trembling, and in severe cases, seizures or unconsciousness.
This is a home emergency. If a small-breed puppy shows these signs, rub a small amount of honey or dilute sugar water on the gums and get to a vet immediately.
Prevention: Frequent meals (3–4 times daily) and minimizing stress are key for very small puppies.
Intestinal Parasites
Almost universal in puppies. Roundworms, hookworms, giardia, and coccidia are the most common. Symptoms include soft stool, diarrhea, poor coat condition, pot-bellied appearance, and failure to thrive. Many puppies carry significant parasite burdens with minimal outward signs.

Illnesses Specific to Kittens
Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Parvovirus)
Functionally equivalent to canine parvovirus in its severity and mechanism. Destroys intestinal cells and bone marrow cells (particularly white blood cells — hence "panleukopenia," meaning all-white-cell reduction). Causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and immune suppression. Highly fatal without intensive treatment.
Can be transmitted from a contaminated environment even without direct cat-to-cat contact. Extremely hardy in the environment. Vaccine-preventable — the FVRCP vaccine is highly effective.
Emergency: Yes. A kitten with sudden lethargy, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting needs emergency care.
Upper Respiratory Infections (URI)
This is the most common illness I see in kittens, particularly those from shelters, catteries, or multi-cat environments. The usual culprits are feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV), causing sneezing, eye discharge, nasal congestion, and reduced appetite.
Most healthy kittens recover with supportive care — keeping the nose clear, ensuring adequate fluid intake, and warming food to enhance smell when appetite is reduced. Some require antibiotics for secondary bacterial infection, or antiviral medications for severe herpesvirus cases.
Important: Kittens who stop eating due to nasal congestion are at risk of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) if the anorexia is prolonged — more than 3–4 days warrants intervention. Young kittens particularly need veterinary attention if not nursing or eating normally.
Feline Herpesvirus: A Lifelong Resident
It's worth noting separately: FHV-1, once contracted, remains latent in nerve tissue for life. It doesn't continuously cause illness — but stress, illness, or immunosuppression can trigger recurrent URI flares throughout the cat's life. Recognizing this helps owners understand why a cat that was sick as a kitten may have occasional eye or nasal symptoms as an adult.
Coccidia and Giardia
Single-celled intestinal parasites, common in kittens from shelters, catteries, or outdoor exposure. Cause soft, mucoid, or watery diarrhea. Not covered by standard dewormers — require specific antiprotozoal treatment. Often self-limiting in healthy adults, but young kittens lack the immune maturity to clear them easily without medication.
Ringworm (Dermatophytosis)
Despite the name, ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. Causes patchy hair loss, scaling, and circular skin lesions — often on the face and ears in kittens. Importantly, it's zoonotic — transmissible to humans — and spreads readily between animals in a household. Requires antifungal treatment (topical and often systemic) and environmental decontamination.
Any new kitten with unexplained hair loss or skin changes should be assessed.
Conditions Affecting Both
Fading Puppy and Kitten Syndrome
A term for neonates who fail to thrive and die in the first two weeks of life, often from a combination of low birth weight, infection, inadequate nursing, or congenital defect. Characterized by progressive weakness, weight loss, and crying. Often not a single diagnosable disease but a cluster of circumstances.
Prevention where possible: monitoring birth weights, ensuring adequate colostrum access, keeping neonates warm, identifying mothers who aren't nursing adequately.
Congenital Abnormalities
Heart defects, cleft palates, portosystemic shunts (abnormal blood vessel connections), and limb abnormalities are discovered either at birth or at the first veterinary examination. Congenital heart conditions in young pets is a topic worth understanding — not all heart murmurs in puppies and kittens indicate serious disease, but some do require early assessment.
The Rule for Young Sick Animals
If a puppy or kitten under 12 weeks is significantly unwell — not eating, severely lethargic, vomiting repeatedly, passing blood — the appropriate timeline for veterinary attention is same-day or emergency, not "let's see how they are tomorrow." Deterioration in very young animals is fast, and interventions that work well in the early stages may not be available once a patient is in crisis.
When to See Your Vet
Beyond emergencies, schedule an appointment if your young pet shows:
- Any respiratory signs (cough, wheeze, labored breathing)
- Diarrhea persisting more than 48 hours, or any bloody stool
- Multiple vomiting episodes in a day
- Hair loss or skin changes
- Eye or ear discharge
- Lameness or reluctance to weight bear

Occasional sneezing in a kitten who is eating, playing, and alert is usually a mild URI or simply nasal irritation. Persistent sneezing alongside eye discharge, reduced appetite, or lethargy warrants a vet visit. Can I catch illnesses from my puppy or kitten?
