It’s Never Just One “Bug”: Understanding the Complexities

I always explain to my clients that CIRDC isn’t a single disease caused by a single villain. It’s a tag-team infection. A cat might be perfectly healthy for years, but when they experience stress, that dormant virus wakes up.

The owner insists Luna hasn’t been outside or near any unfamiliar cats. But the trigger wasn’t a new infection; it was the stress of a recent move to a new apartment. Luna wasn’t infected by a sick animal—she was experiencing a herpes flare-up triggered by her own environmental anxiety.

So, did Cooper give Whiskers a respiratory infection? The answer is a cautious, complicated “yes.”

While most of the viruses that cause CIRDC are strictly species-specific, there is one notable exception: the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. While kennel cough is primarily a canine issue, cats can catch this specific bacterial component from an infected dog. It’s considered much less common in felines, but it absolutely happens, especially in multi-pet households where animals share tight quarters, water bowls, and grooming spaces.

However, more often than not, when a dog comes home from the boarding facility with a cough and the household cat starts sneezing a few days later, the cat hasn’t actually caught the dog’s illness. Instead, the stress of having a loud, sick, barking dog in the house triggered the cat’s latent feline herpesvirus. The timing is a classic cause-and-effect illusion.

One of the biggest debates in veterinary medicine today revolves around antibiotic overuse. Because these respiratory syndromes are often viral in nature, antibiotics are entirely useless against the primary pathogen. Giving a cat antibiotics for a feline herpesvirus flare-up won’t touch the virus itself.

However, these viruses damage the delicate lining of the respiratory tract, which opens the door for secondary bacterial infections to move in. This is why veterinarians sometimes prescribe antibiotics—to catch those secondary invaders before they settle into the lungs and cause pneumonia.

I’ll be honest—I’ve changed my mind on this over the years as the research evolved. Early in my career, I reached for antibiotics almost reflexively, just in case. But today, relying on evidence-based medicine, I prefer to let the viral infection run its course with aggressive supportive care. If a pet is eating well, acting relatively normal, and just has a nagging cough or the sniffles, I recommend humidifiers, softening their food, and gently wiping their nose. We reserve antibiotics for cases where a fever persists, lethargy deepens, or the illness threatens to become pneumonia. The Truth About the “Kennel Cough Vaccine”

I frequently hear frustration from owners who say, “But I got my dog the kennel cough vaccine! How did they still get sick?”

This is a totally valid question, and the debate stems from a misunderstanding of what the vaccine actually does. Because CIRDC is a complex of multiple pathogens, a vaccine that only protects against Bordetella or parainfluenza can’t possibly protect against every single cause. A fully vaccinated dog can still catch “kennel cough” from an adenovirus, a respiratory coronavirus, or canine pneumovirus. The vaccine doesn’t build an invisible forcefield, but it drastically reduces the severity and duration of the illness.

This brings up another massive challenge in veterinary medicine: asymptomatic shedding. Pets can shed viruses when they show absolutely zero symptoms. A dog could be playing happily at daycare, spreading pathogens to others, and not start coughing until three days later. This creates a real dilemma for boarding facilities regarding how strict their health requirements should be before allowing animals inside.

Advanced Diagnostics and Emerging Threats

The good news is that our diagnostic tools are getting incredibly sharp. Instead of just guessing it’s “kennel cough,” we now utilize PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing panels. With a single swab, we can test for a dozen different respiratory pathogens simultaneously, allowing for much more targeted treatment plans.

This technology became incredibly valuable in late 2023 when news broke of an Atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (aCIRD) making dogs sick across several regions. The mystery illness highlighted to the public just how complex and evolving these respiratory syndromes really are. It served as a stark reminder of how vulnerable unvaccinated or immunocompromised pets are to novel pathogens.

Protecting Your Pets: Practical Management

Whether you’re dealing with CIRDC or a feline herpes flare-up, managing these infections requires a holistic approach. Here is what I recommend to my clients:

  • Core Vaccinations are Non-Negotiable: Core vaccinations, like the canine Bordetella vaccine and the feline FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) vaccine, are your first line of defense. Talk to your vet about what’s appropriate for your pet’s lifestyle.
  • Isolate the Sick: If your dog comes home from a facility with a cough, isolate them from other pets in the home immediately. Don’t share bowls, toys, or bedding until the sick pet is fully recovered.
  • Manage Stress: For cats prone to herpes flare-ups, environmental enrichment is medicine. Provide hiding spots, maintain a steady routine, and use pheromone diffusers to keep their environment calm.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly between handling a sick pet and a healthy one. Many of these pathogens are fragile in the environment but easily transmitted on human hands and clothing.

While domestic dogs and cats are certainly not endangered, the pathogens they carry pose a massive, often overlooked threat to global wildlife. In conservation and wildlife rehabilitation, domestic respiratory pathogens are a severe hazard. For example, feline herpesvirus and other common domestic cat diseases can be absolutely devastating to endangered wild felids—like lions, snow leopards, and tigers—if cross-species transmission occurs in shared habitats. By vaccinating our pets, isolating them when they are sick, and managing their health responsibly, we aren’t just protecting the animals in our living rooms. We are acting as a barrier, preventing these highly contagious pathogens from spilling over into vulnerable wild populations. Taking care of our pets is, ultimately, an act of conservation.
