Just last week, a frantic client rushed a beautiful 12-week-old Maine Coon kitten named Luna into my clinic. Luna had been happily playing in her new family’s living room when she suddenly vomited a squirming knot of tiny, spaghetti-like worms onto the Persian rug. Her owner was horrified, convinced this meant Luna was gravely ill. On the exact same day, I had a phone call from a lovely retired teacher whose older Beagle, Barnaby, had left behind “moving grains of rice” on his favorite dog bed.

While both of these scenarios might make your skin crawl, they are incredibly common. Intestinal parasites are an everyday reality of sharing our lives and homes with animals. However, not all worms are created equal. Understanding the vastly different lifecycles of these pests is the secret to keeping your pets—and your family—safe. Let’s look at the two most common culprits I see in the exam room: roundworms and tapeworms.

The Spaghetti vs. Rice Dilemma: Identifying the Invaders

The easiest way to figure out what kind of parasite your pet has is by looking at the evidence left behind in the litter box or the yard. I always tell my clients to play detective, because the worms we see with our naked eyes are usually just the tip of the iceberg.

Roundworms: The Freeloaders

When a dog or cat is infected with cat roundworms or their canine equivalents (like Toxocara cati or Toxocara canis), you will usually see the actual worms in your pet’s stool or vomit. They look remarkably like ivory-colored spaghetti, reaching lengths of four to six inches. These worms live freely in the intestines, floating in the digested food and absorbing the nutrients your pet desperately needs. This is why heavily infected puppies and kittens often present with a dull coat and a swollen, “pot-bellied” appearance—they are literally starving while eating full meals. Luna, our Maine Coon kitten, was a classic case of this physical presentation.

Tapeworms: The Segmented Hitchhikers

Dog tapeworms and cat tapeworms (most commonly Dipylidium caninum) look entirely different. The adult worm actually attaches itself to the wall of the intestine using hook-like mouthparts. Instead of passing whole worms, the parasite sheds tiny, ivory-colored segments (called proglottids) out through the pet’s anus. When fresh, these segments look like wriggling grains of white rice or cucumber seeds. You will often see them crawling on the surface of fresh feces, or you might spot dried, hardened segments that look like sesame seeds stuck to the fur under your pet’s tail or around their favorite sleeping spots. This was exactly what Barnaby’s owner had discovered on his dog bed.

The Journey of a Worm: Radically Different Lifecycles

To truly defeat these parasites, you have to understand how they get into your pets in the first place. Their lifecycles dictate our treatment and prevention strategies.

How Pets Get Roundworms

Rounds are contracted through environmental contamination. Microscopic roundworm eggs are passed in an infected animal’s feces. Over a few weeks in the soil, these eggs develop into infectious larvae. Your dog or cat then accidentally ingests these eggs by sniffing contaminated dirt, grooming their paws after walking through the yard, or sharing a litter box.

The lifecycle gets even more fascinating—and frustrating—when we look at puppies and kittens. A mother dog or cat can pass roundworm larvae directly to her babies across the placenta before they are even born, or through her milk while nursing. This is why almost every puppy and kitten has roundworms unless they are aggressively dewormed from a very young age.

How Pets Get Tapeworms

Tapeworms require an “intermediate host” to complete their lifecycle. Your pet cannot get tapeworms just by eating worm eggs from the dirt. The most common route of infection is by swallowing an infected flea.

Here is how it works: flea larvae in your home or yard eat the microscopic tapeworm eggs. The tapeworm then develops inside the flea. When your dog or cat is grooming themselves and accidentally swallows an adult flea, the flea is digested, releasing the young tapeworm into your pet’s intestine, where it grows into an adult. Hunting and eating small prey, like mice or rabbits, is another common way pets contract less common species of tapeworms.

The Human Factor: Protecting Your Family

When I talk to families, especially those with young children or immunocompromised individuals, the conversation quickly shifts to zoonotic risk—the potential for these parasites to spread to humans. Both parasites can infect people, but the risks and mechanisms are different.

Because tapeworms usually require a flea to transmit them, human infection with Dipylidium caninum is incredibly rare. To get it, a person would have to accidentally swallow an infected flea. Roundworms, however, pose a much more serious threat. If a child plays in a sandbox or dirt where a cat or dog has defecated, they can accidentally ingest microscopic roundworm eggs by putting their dirty fingers in their mouth. Once inside a human, the larvae don’t just stay in the digestive tract; they can migrate through the body’s tissues. This condition is called Visceral Larva Migrans. If a larva migrates into the eye, a condition known as Ocular Larva Migrans, it can cause permanent vision loss.

I want to be clear: I don’t say this to catastrophize or cause panic. Human roundworm infections are entirely preventable with good hygiene and basic veterinary care for your pets. Designing a Winning Pet Deworming Schedule

Because these worms operate differently, our approach to getting rid of them must be tailored. There is a lot of misinformation online, and I have definitely changed my mind over the years as new research on parasite resistance has emerged. Let’s break down the facts.

Starting Early with Puppies and Kittens

Because roundworms are so easily passed from mother to baby, puppies and kittens need an aggressive, early pet deworming schedule. We typically start deworming kittens and puppies at two to three weeks of age, repeating the medication every two weeks until they are a few months old. This protocol catches the worms as they mature through their lifecycle. (Always consult your veterinarian for exact dosages and timing—never guess at a dose for a tiny, growing body).

Adult Pets: The Resistance Debate

For adult dogs and cats, the veterinary community is currently debating the best approach. Historically, many vets advocated for routine, year-round chemical deworming for all adult pets. However, just like the overuse of antibiotics, we are seeing parasites developing resistance to these medications. Because of this, I’ve shifted my approach for my adult patients.

Rather than blindly giving dewormers year-round, I prefer to rely on annual or bi-annual fecal antigen tests (like ELISA tests, which are much more accurate than older microscopic floats) to check what is actually living in the pet’s gut. We pair this with year-round monthly heartworm preventatives, many of which are designed to prevent and control routine roundworms and hookworms. We save the heavy-duty, targeted deworming for when we actually confirm an infection.

Why Over-the-Counter Dewormers Often Fail

If you suspect your pet has worms, you might be tempted to grab a cheap dewormer from a pet store or local supermarket. I strongly advise against this. Most over-the-counter dewormers only contain ingredients that target roundworms. They are completely ineffective against tapeworms. Tapeworms require specific medications, like praziquantel, which are typically only available through your veterinarian or via a specific prescription. Giving your pet an over-the-counter medication when they have tapeworms won’t hurt them, but it will give you a false sense of security while the parasite continues to thrive.

Winning the War in the Environment

Medication alone is rarely enough to keep parasites at bay long-term. You have to break the cycle in your home and yard.

  • Scoop Daily: Roundworm eggs don’t become infectious immediately; they need a few weeks in the environment to develop. By scooping your litter box daily and picking up dog feces in the yard immediately, you remove the eggs before they can become a threat. Cover children’s sandboxes when not in use to keep neighborhood cats from using them as litter boxes.
  • Enforce Flea Control: Because fleas are the primary vector for the most common tapeworm, aggressive, modern flea prevention is your best defense. We are currently seeing localized spikes in tapeworm infections because some local flea populations are showing resistance to older generations of flea medications. Ask your vet about newer, fast-acting oral preventatives.
  • Raw Diet Caution: If you feed your pet a raw diet, be aware of the risks. Raw meat, especially from hunting or certain livestock, can contain tapeworm cysts. If you choose to feed raw, you must adhere to strict freezing protocols to kill potential parasites before serving the food. Always discuss the risks with your veterinary team.

By the time Luna the kitten and Barnaby the Beagle went home from the clinic that day, their owners had the right medication in hand and a clear plan for their environment. Parasites are a natural part of the animal kingdom, but they don’t have to be a permanent part of your home. By understanding how these remarkable, albeit gross, creatures survive and spread, you can easily keep your pets healthy and your family safe.

By responsibly controlling parasites in our domestic dogs and cats—through targeted testing rather than blanket chemical use—we help prevent environmental contamination and protect vulnerable wildlife, ensuring a healthier, balanced ecosystem for all species.
