Protein: What It Does and Why Quality Matters

The grain-free movement swapped grains (corn, rice, oats, barley) for other carbohydrate sources like potatoes, lentils, and peas. Most grain-free dogs aren't eating lower-carb — they're eating the same carbohydrate percentage from different sources. And legumes in particular are currently under scrutiny for a possible association with heart disease. Grains are not the dietary villain they've been marketed as.


Reading Macros on a Label

Dry matter basis comparison. You can't fairly compare foods with different moisture levels on a straight percentage. A wet food listed at 10% protein contains much more protein per dry ounce than that number suggests once you remove all the water. The conversion: divide the percentage by (100 minus the moisture percentage), then multiply by 100. A bit tedious, but the only fair comparison.

The guaranteed analysis is minimums and maximums. Protein and fat are minimums — the food contains at least those amounts. Moisture and fiber are maximums. Actual levels can differ, meaning two foods with identical guaranteed analysis might have notably different real nutrient levels.

"High protein" is largely marketing. A food labeled as such might contain 28% protein while a standard food contains 25%. For most dogs, that difference is minor. What matters more is the protein source and its digestibility.
