When a dog or cat has an environmental allergy — to pollen, dust mites, grasses, mold spores — their immune system overreacts to something harmless. That overreaction triggers inflammation, which compromises the skin barrier. Think of the skin as a brick wall: the cells are the bricks, and lipids (fats) between them are the mortar. Now picture a Cocker Spaniel, a Basset Hound, or a Bloodhound. Those heavy, floppy ears hang down over the canal opening like a flap sealing a tent. The interior becomes dark, warm, and humid — a perfect incubator.

Breeds like Cocker Spaniels, Pugs, and Chinese Shar-Peis are especially vulnerable to otitis externa, which is the medical term for inflammation of the outer ear canal. Pugs and Shar-Peis add another layer of risk: they have narrow ear canals and, in the Shar-Pei’s case, thickened skin folds that trap moisture and debris even further. When you combine that anatomy with allergic skin disease, you get a recurring cycle of yeast overgrowth that can be remarkably stubborn to break.

I remember a Pug named Winston who came in after his third ear infection in eight months. His owner, Kevin, was frustrated and wondering what he was doing wrong. The truth was, Kevin wasn’t doing anything wrong with the ears themselves. When yeast does overgrow in cats, it often targets the chin (causing feline acne), the nail beds, or the skin folds around the face in breeds like Persians. Ear infections from yeast do happen in cats, but they’re significantly less common than in dogs — partly because most cats have erect or semi-erect ears, and partly because their grooming behavior keeps the ear surface cleaner.

That’s something I wish more owners understood: diagnosing a yeast infection versus a bacterial infection versus a pure allergic flare isn’t something you can do by looking or smelling. Daisy did have a significant yeast overgrowth. But she also had early signs of atopic dermatitis, which is the medical term for environmental skin allergies. Owners go down elimination diets, switch shampoos, try supplements — and sometimes those things help, but often they’re treating the wrong layer of the problem.
