Whether you share your home with a Border Collie, a Bengal cat, or both, the cast of characters is identical. We’re talking about roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, plus microscopic troublemakers like coccidia and giardia. Even French heartworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) can affect both species.

What does differ is how these parasites behave in each species’s body, how they show up in stool, and how they’re treated. So while the worms themselves aren’t picking favorites, the way they affect your pet can look quite different depending on whether your companion has paws that purr or paws that wag.

Think of worms as internal thieves. They survive by either eating the food your pet consumes or feeding directly on your pet’s blood and tissue. Some are visible to the naked eye—impressively so, unfortunately—while others are invisible without a microscope. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that internal parasites are incredibly common in both species, which means vigilance matters regardless of which kind of pet you love.

Roundworms: The Spaghetti Imposters

In cats, the culprit is usually Toxocara cati or Toxascaris leonina. Kittens acquire them the same way puppies do, though adult cats more commonly pick them up by eating infected prey. This is why your indoor-outdoor hunter is at higher risk than your contented couch-potato cat.

What You’ll Actually See

In dogs, roundworms sometimes appear in vomit or stool, looking like coiled noodles. They’re pale yellow to white and frankly unmistakable. In cats, you’re more likely to spot them around the rear end, stuck to the fur under the tail, or in bedding. Cats are fastidious groomers, so they often clean up evidence before you ever see it—making regular fecal testing especially important for feline patients.

I always remind owners: by the time you see an adult worm, there’s already a significant population inside. One roundworm can lay tens of thousands of eggs per day. Those eggs pass out in stool, contaminate the environment, and can survive in soil for months or even years. This is why picking up dog waste promptly and keeping litter boxes clean isn’t just about hygiene—it’s about breaking the transmission cycle.

Hookworms and Whipworms: The Silent Blood-Feeders

If roundworms are the obvious criminals, hookworms and whipworms are the stealth operatives. Both attach themselves to the intestinal wall, but hookworms go a step further—they actually feed on your pet’s blood.

Hookworms affect both dogs and cats, and they’re tiny. You won’t see these in the stool. In dogs, heavy infections can cause severe anemia, especially in puppies. I’ll never forget treating a twelve-week-old Labrador named Bella who came in pale, weak, and barely able to stand. Her packed cell volume—a measure of red blood cells—was dangerously low. Hookworms were the culprits, and she needed both deworming medication and a blood transfusion to pull through. Her owner was stunned because Bella’s stool had looked completely normal.

In cats, hookworm infections tend to be less dramatic but can still cause weight loss, poor coat condition, and mild anemia. Cats infected with hookworms may simply seem “off”—eating fine but slowly losing weight and energy.

Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) primarily affect dogs and live in the cecum and large intestine. They cause chronic, sometimes bloody diarrhea. Cats are rarely affected by whipworms, which is one genuine difference between the species. If your cat has bloody stools, whipworms aren’t the first suspect, whereas in dogs, they absolutely belong on the differential list.

Tapeworms: The Rice Grain Clue

Remember Maria’s call about Miso and the “moving rice grains”? That’s classic tapeworm territory. Tapeworms are long, segmented worms that live in the small intestine, but what you actually see aren’t the worms themselves—you’re seeing proglottids, which are egg-filled segments that break off and crawl out through the anus.

These segments look like tiny grains of white rice or cucumber seeds, and yes, they move. They can appear in stool, stuck to the fur around the rear end, or in your pet’s bedding. In dogs, the most common route of infection is through fleas. The dog swallows a flea while grooming, and that flea was carrying tapeworm larvae. In cats, it’s the same story—fleas are the primary intermediate host.

The key difference between dogs and cats with tapeworms isn’t the worm itself but how quickly you’re likely to notice. Cats groom themselves constantly, so they may swallow the segments before you ever see them. Dogs, particularly long-coated breeds, often have segments visible in their fur for longer. Either way, if you’re seeing rice-like segments, your pet almost certainly has tapeworms, and you almost certainly have a flea problem to address as well.

The Invisible Threats: Giardia and Coccidia

Not all parasites are worms. Some of the most frustrating infections I treat involve microscopic, single-celled organisms that live and reproduce inside the intestines. You will never see these with the naked eye, no matter how closely you examine your pet’s stool.

Giardia causes foul-smelling, often intermittent diarrhea in both dogs and cats. Pets pick it up from contaminated water—streams, puddles, even communal water bowls at dog parks. Cats in multi-cat households are particularly susceptible because the parasite spreads easily in shared litter boxes. Giardia is also notoriously difficult to clear because the organisms form hardy cysts that resist many disinfectants and can persist in the environment.

Coccidia are similar microscopic parasites that most commonly affect young animals. Puppies and kittens from breeding facilities, shelters, or rescue situations frequently arrive already infected. The diarrhea can be severe, sometimes bloody, and dehydration is a real risk in small bodies.

I’ve changed my mind about something over the years. Early in my career, I treated every positive fecal test aggressively—medication, environmental disinfection, repeat testing. Now, if a pet has a positive result for giardia or coccidia but no symptoms, I often take a more conservative approach. Research shows many healthy adult pets can carry these organisms without illness, and over-treatment contributes to parasite resistance. The decision always depends on the individual patient, their living situation, and whether humans in the household are immunocompromised.

Beyond the Gut: When Worms Wander

While we typically think of intestinal parasites staying put, some worms affect other body systems entirely. French heartworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) primarily impacts the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, causing coughing, breathing difficulties, and potentially fatal heart complications. It’s more common in dogs than cats and is spreading into new geographic regions—a trend I’m watching closely.

Then there’s Physaloptera, the stomach worm. These creatures attach to the stomach lining and can cause vomiting, sometimes with visible worms present. Both dogs and cats can pick them up by eating infected insects or small animals. They’re easy to miss on standard fecal tests because their eggs don’t always show up, which makes endoscopy—passing a small camera into the stomach—sometimes necessary for diagnosis.

Multi-Pet Households: The Cross-Species Challenge

Because dogs and cats share the same parasites, having both creates unique challenges. When I diagnose hookworms in a dog, I immediately ask about cats in the home, and vice versa. Roundworm eggs can survive in soil for years, and shared yards mean shared exposure.

The debate in veterinary medicine is ongoing: do you treat every pet in a household when one tests positive? My approach is individualized. If a dog has tapeworms from fleas, I check every pet for fleas and treat accordingly, but I don’t automatically deworm the cat who shows no evidence of infection. There’s a challenge emerging that every pet owner should know about. Some parasites, particularly hookworms in dogs, are developing resistance to common deworming medications. I’ve seen cases where we’ve had to rotate through multiple drug classes and combine approaches to clear persistent infections. This wasn’t a significant problem fifteen years ago, but it’s becoming a real concern in veterinary medicine.

This resistance is partly driven by overuse of broad-spectrum preventives without fecal testing.
