My first winter in practice, a client brought in a three-year-old Labrador named Huck. He'd been "playing outside for a while" — turned out that meant four hours in 18°F weather. By the time they carried him in, his rectal temperature was 95°F, he couldn't stand, and his gums had gone pale. We spent the next two hours rewarming him with warm IV fluids, heated blankets, and a whole lot of worry. He survived, luckily. But his owners had genuinely not known that a healthy, well-furred dog could get that cold that fast.
Winter is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. And the hazards aren't always the ones people think of.
The Cold Tolerance Question Everyone Gets Wrong
People assume cold tolerance is simple: big dog with thick fur = fine in winter. Small dog, short coat = needs a sweater. Reality is much more complicated.
Breed matters enormously, but so does age, body condition, health status, and acclimatization. A Siberian Husky who lives inside year-round is not the same as a Husky who's been living outdoors in gradually cooling temperatures. The first one has lost much of her thermal regulatory advantage. The second one has physiologically adapted — her peripheral blood vessels have adjusted, her coat has grown in properly, her body has literally changed.
Senior dogs lose thermoregulatory capacity. A 12-year-old Golden Retriever is not the same animal as a 4-year-old Golden in terms of cold tolerance — even if they're the same size. Older pets have reduced circulation, less muscle mass (which generates heat), and often underlying conditions like hypothyroidism or heart disease that further impair their ability to stay warm.
Lean dogs are at higher risk. That layer of subcutaneous fat isn't just cosmetic — it's insulation. A whippet or greyhound in the cold has almost nothing between their organs and the outside world. Short-coated, single-coated, or very lean dogs need protection at temperatures that wouldn't bother a Malamute.
And puppies. Puppies under six months have immature thermoregulation and can become hypothermic shockingly quickly.
As a general rough guide: when it's below 45°F, start monitoring small breeds and short-coated dogs for signs of discomfort. Below 32°F, most dogs need limited exposure time. Below 20°F, no dog should be out for extended periods without shelter and close supervision — and many shouldn't be out at all. Cats, being smaller and more adaptable, generally do better than people expect in cold environments if they have adequate shelter, but their extremities (ears, paw pads, tail tips) are still highly vulnerable.
Hypothermia: What It Actually Looks Like
Most pet owners picture a clearly suffering animal — shaking violently, barely moving. By the time you see that, you're looking at moderate to severe hypothermia.
Early hypothermia is easy to miss. Your dog seems a little stiff. Maybe he's less playful than usual, a bit quieter. He might be shivering — shivering is actually a good sign, it means the body is still actively trying to generate heat. But if he stops shivering and becomes lethargic or seems confused or uncoordinated, that's a medical emergency.
The progression goes like this: mild hypothermia (body temp 90-99°F) brings shivering, lethargy, weakness. Moderate hypothermia (82-90°F) brings muscle stiffness, slow heart rate, pale or gray gums, stumbling. Severe hypothermia (below 82°F) brings unconsciousness, fixed dilated pupils, and potential cardiac arrest. Huck came in at 95°F and he was already unable to walk.

Cats show similar progression but often present later — their small size makes them harder to monitor outside, and outdoor/feral cats may not come home until they're already in trouble.
Antifreeze: The Winter Poison I Think About Every November
I want to spend real time on this because antifreeze poisoning is one of the most preventable and most heartbreaking things I see in winter practice.
Ethylene glycol — the active ingredient in most conventional antifreeze — is genuinely sweet-tasting. Dogs seek it out. Cats will lick it off garage floors or their own paws after walking through a puddle. A small dog can be fatally poisoned by less than a teaspoon. A cat by even less.
The cruelty of ethylene glycol toxicity is that it looks like the animal is getting better after the initial drunk-seeming phase. In the first hour or two, they seem wobbly, disoriented, maybe vomiting — not great, but you might talk yourself into waiting to see how they do. Then they appear to improve. This is the most dangerous window. The ethylene glycol is metabolizing into oxalic acid, which is crystallizing in the kidneys. By the time severe kidney failure symptoms appear 24-72 hours later, the window for effective treatment has often closed.
If your pet has possibly ingested antifreeze, don't wait. Don't wait to see if symptoms develop. Call your vet immediately. The antidote (ethanol or fomepizole, depending on species) only works if given within a few hours.
Prevention is the real answer: keep antifreeze containers sealed and stored out of reach, clean up spills immediately, consider switching to propylene glycol-based antifreeze (which still requires careful handling but is far less toxic). And if your dog walks in the garage or driveway, wipe their paws before they have a chance to groom.

Ice Melt and Road Salt: The Hazard Under Your Dog's Feet
Ice melt and rock salt products sit on sidewalks all winter, and most dogs walk through them on every winter walk. The problems are twofold.
First, direct paw damage. Salt and chemical deicers are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of tissues. Walking on heavily salted pavement causes drying, cracking, and chemical burns to paw pads. Some products, like calcium chloride, generate heat when they dissolve and can literally burn the skin they contact.
Second, ingestion. Dogs lick their paws. Whatever's on those paws goes in their mouths. High sodium ingestion causes vomiting and diarrhea. Some deicing chemicals cause more significant toxicity.
The fix is straightforward but requires actual follow-through: wipe your dog's paws after every winter walk with a damp cloth or dilute warm water footbath. Pay attention to the areas between the toes where crystals accumulate. Dog boots prevent contact entirely, though getting a dog to accept boots takes some training. Paw wax products create a barrier but don't eliminate the need to rinse after walks.
For outdoor cats who can't be escorted on leash walks, the best strategy is limiting their exposure during and immediately after heavy salt application, providing clean water so they don't drink from roadside puddles, and checking their paws regularly.
Frostbite: Slower Than You Think
Unlike hypothermia, frostbite doesn't announce itself dramatically. Your dog or cat can be outside in frozen temperatures and come home looking completely fine — and only develop frostbite signs in the following hours as the affected tissue rewarmed and the damage became apparent.
The most vulnerable areas are the parts with the least insulation and the poorest blood supply when the body starts shunting circulation to protect core temperature: ear tips, paw pads, tail tip, and in male dogs, the scrotum. Yes, I've treated frostbitten scrota. More than once.
Frostbitten tissue initially appears pale, gray, or blue-white. It feels cold and hard. As it rewarmed, it becomes red, swollen, and painful, and may develop blisters. Severely frostbitten tissue eventually turns black and dry — necrotic.
Do not rub frostbitten tissue. Do not apply dry heat (heating pad, hair dryer). Warm the area slowly with warm (not hot) water — about 104-108°F — and get to a vet. Tissue that looks salvageable in the first hour may not survive; tissue that looks black may sometimes partially recover. It's impossible to assess accurately at home.
Outdoor Dogs: The Legal and Ethical Line
This is where I'm going to be direct, because I get questions about this constantly.
Keeping a dog outside in winter isn't automatically cruel, but it requires genuinely adequate shelter. Not "a doghouse." Adequate shelter means: a structure that blocks wind from all sides (including underneath), has a door or covered entrance that the dog can pass through, is sized appropriately (small enough to trap body heat, large enough for the dog to turn around), has dry bedding changed frequently, and is elevated off frozen ground. Water that doesn't freeze. Food at appropriately increased caloric levels because a dog burning heat in cold weather needs more calories.
Even with all of that, many dogs should not be outside in severe cold. Short-coated breeds, small breeds, puppies, seniors, and dogs with health conditions — none of them belong outdoors in subfreezing temperatures without very close monitoring.
If you're keeping a dog outside and the temperature drops below 32°F, check on them more frequently. If you wouldn't want to spend an hour out there, your dog probably doesn't either.
Indoor Hazards People Don't Think About
Winter doesn't just mean outdoor cold. Your heated house creates its own set of hazards.
Space heaters. Dogs and cats investigate warm objects. They also fall asleep next to them. Contact burns are common, and fire hazards from knocked-over or unattended heaters are real. Keep space heaters elevated or behind barriers, use tip-over shutoff models, and never leave them unattended with pets in the room.
Fireplace and wood stove safety. Flying embers, hot glass fronts, and ash inhalation are all concerns. Fireplace screens are not optional if you have pets. Ash from wood fires contains potassium hydroxide (lye) — a mouthful of ash isn't immediately dangerous but warrants a vet call.
Carbon monoxide. Blocked furnace vents, improperly vented heaters, and running cars in attached garages can produce CO levels that affect pets before humans notice. Pets are lower to the ground and often sleep more, so they may accumulate exposure while you're awake and active. CO detectors are cheap. Every house with pets should have them.
Dry heat and skin. Central heating dries the air significantly. Pets with sensitive skin or chronic skin conditions often flare in winter — itching, dandruff, and irritation increase when indoor humidity drops. Humidifiers help. So does not over-bathing in winter, which strips what little moisture remains in the skin and coat.
Cats and Cold: A Few Specific Notes
Cats are functionally more cold-tolerant than most people realize — a healthy adult cat can handle temperatures down to about 45°F given adequate shelter. But "adequate shelter" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
The main cold-related risks for indoor cats are:
- Heating vent burns. Cats love sitting on floor vents. They can burn their paws or bellies on forced-air heating vents, especially if they're sleeping.
- Curiosity about fireplaces. Cats absolutely will jump toward or into fireplaces. Screens, doors, and barriers.
- Escape during cold weather. A cat who slips out on a winter night in a cold climate is at real risk if they can't get back in quickly.

Winter Walk Safety: The Practical Version
Leash your dog. Ice and snow cover familiar scents, and dogs can become disoriented in winter storms. Dogs who bolt during walks — fireworks, unexpected sounds — are much harder to find in heavy snowfall.
Watch where you're walking. Frozen ponds and ice-covered bodies of water are not safe for dogs. Ice that supports a human doesn't necessarily support a dog (especially larger ones), and even if it does, dogs who fall through struggle far more than humans to self-rescue. The panic, the slick edges, the cold water — it's quickly fatal. Keep dogs leashed near frozen water.
Limit walk duration based on temperature, wind chill, and your dog's individual tolerance. A 20-minute walk at 20°F with a 15 mph wind is significantly more dangerous than a 20-minute walk at 20°F on a still day. Wind chill math applies to dogs too.
Reflective gear matters. Winter days are short. If you're walking at dawn or dusk — and in winter, that's most walks — make sure your dog is visible. Reflective leashes, collars, and vest attachments aren't just nice-to-have.
Quick Reference: Cold Weather Safety Thresholds
45°F and below: Monitor small, short-coated, senior, or ill dogs closely. Limit outdoor time.
32°F and below: Most dogs need coat protection. Keep walks shorter. Watch for shivering.
20°F and below: High risk for all but the most cold-tolerant breeds. Limit all outdoor exposure. Bring outdoor dogs in.
Below 10°F with wind chill: No dog should be outdoors for more than a few minutes without shelter access.
Any temperature: Watch for shivering, hunching, reluctance to walk, lifting paws off ground, whimpering, or sudden behavioral changes. These are all signs your pet is cold.

Thicker coats help, but they're not immunity. Even cold-adapted breeds like Huskies and Malamutes have individual variation, and dogs who've spent the winter indoors have less acclimatization than people expect. Watch for behavioral signs of discomfort rather than assuming coat = safety.
